What's New?

ON THE ROAD AGAIN…

“Don’t take a second tunic…dust off your feet…welcome strangers; some of them are angels…” These are the words (paraphrased here) that Jesus spoke to his friends as he led them through the towns and neighborhoods of first century Palestine. Jesus taught that all of life is a sacrament…and that we are called to celebrate its holiness in a huge variety of ways.

Though I quote (loosely) the founder of my own faith, those from other traditions also know this central truth: Hunger is not pretty; homelessness is not pretty. These facts remain despite of one’s own personal faith. Open to all - those of faith and those of perhaps no faith at all - we give and we receive. And in the encounter all is made holy.

We are here…doing a ministry of presence…a ministry of the itinerant to the itinerant. We invite you to walk with us…we invite you into the encounter, whether that is drinking some water, talking together or praying with and for each other.

The weather has turned in Chicago…we are at the high point of summer with the city’s 4th of July celebration coming in just days. And we and our green wagon of sandwiches and water can be found (on a sporadic schedule presently) near the library in downtown Chicago.

Aldermen of Chicago…please contact us and let us know where we might be helpful in your neighborhood. It’s one of the benefits of doing ministry with a wagon - we can come to you!

"All work and no play makes Jack and Jill dull folks," to paraphrase an old line.
Well, here at Open Cathedral, work and play are
ONE!
Future plans include street retreats where folks come and see
walking with folks who are normally
shunned due to homelessness
or other perceived differences
in order to
REALIZE
their situation.
We also plan to be holy fools,
in order to
EDUCATE
others about homelessness and break down stereotypes.
Presently, we are gearing up to begin our sandwich
ministry again and take sweat socks to
CARE
for  physical needs of people on the streets and our
PRESENCE
to help with spiritual needs.
So, come join the
DANCE!!

Many thanks to Sophia's Circle of St Mary of Celle Church, Berwyn IL, for donating scarves and shawls!!
